- What Redacta is. Redacta blurs or blacks out people, faces, vehicles and text in the photos and videos you choose. It finds them automatically, and it lets you correct what it found and mark regions of your own. All of it happens on your phone: your photos and videos are not uploaded, and we never see them. It is operated by CLC Agency (“we”).
- Automatic detection finds much, not all. It is a machine looking at a picture, and it will miss things: a face turned away, a face too small or too dark, a reflection, a plate at an angle, handwriting, text in a script it does not read, a person behind glass. It will also blur things you wanted kept. On a video it looks at frames as it goes and follows what it found in between, so a fast-moving thing can slip out of its blur for a moment. Check the result yourself before you share it. The app gives you the editor for exactly that: the boxes are yours to move, resize, add and remove. Redaction you have not looked at is not redaction.
- Not legal advice, and not a promise of compliance. Many people redact a photo because a law, a court, an employer or a publisher requires it — POPIA, the GDPR, a disclosure order, a newsroom’s rules. Redacta is a tool for doing that work. It is not legal advice, and using it is not a defence or a guarantee that you have met any obligation. Whether a particular photo, once redacted, may lawfully be published, filed or handed over is your judgement, or your lawyer’s, and not ours. Where the stake is high, have a person check every output.
- What we do to your files. Redacta never changes or deletes your original: every redaction is written as a new file, which it saves to your gallery, and the original stays where it was. We strip the location, the capture time and the rest of the embedded metadata from what we write, on both the free and the paid tier. Blurring and blacking out are not reversible by us, and the output carries no hidden copy of what was under the blur — but we cannot promise that no future tool could ever recover anything from any image, and heavy blurring is not the same as cutting a thing out. A black-out removes more than a blur.
- Your part. You may use Redacta for yourself, on your own phones. Use it only on media you have the right to use. You may not use it to break the law, to conceal evidence, to alter a record you are obliged to keep whole, or to pass an edited image off as an untouched one. You may not pull the app apart to take its models or its code, or interfere with it.
- Free and paid. The free app adds a small “Redacta” mark to what it saves, handles one item at a time, and shows ads. Pro removes the mark and the ads, handles batches, and stamps the date and your own text on what it saves, and the place too where the phone will give it. Pro is a one-time purchase, made through the App Store or Google Play: you pay once, and it does not renew. Their terms govern the payment and any refund — we cannot refund a store purchase ourselves. Pro belongs to the store account that bought it, and “Restore purchases” brings it back on another phone of yours that uses the same store and account. Pro changes what the app will do for you; it does not make the automatic detection find more.
- Ads and measurement. The free app shows ads through Google AdMob. They are never personalised to you. Separately, and only if you allow it, the app tells Meta that it was installed and opened, so we can tell which of our ads work; in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland we ask first, and everywhere else you can turn it off in Settings. Your photos and videos are no part of either one, and nothing about what you redact is ever sent anywhere. The privacy policy says this in full and is part of these terms.
- No warranty. Redacta is provided as it is and as it is available, without warranty of any kind, as far as the law allows. We do not warrant that its detection is accurate or complete, that it finds any particular thing, that it is available at any time, or that it suits a purpose of yours.
- Our liability. As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any loss, damage, claim or harm that comes from using Redacta or from relying on what it redacted — including a face, a plate, a name or a document it did not find, or an output you shared without checking. Where the law does not allow that, our liability to you is limited to what you paid us for Pro. Nothing in these terms limits a liability that the law does not let us limit, and nothing takes away a right you have as a consumer under the law of your country.
- Other people’s work. Redacta is built on open-source software, which keeps its own licences: FFmpeg, under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0, unmodified and dynamically linked, its source available from ffmpeg.org; Google ML Kit for finding faces and text; and a TensorFlow Lite object-detection model for finding people and vehicles. The full list is in Settings, under About, where “View licenses” shows every one.
- Changes. We may change these terms. The app asks you to agree again when they change. If you do not agree, stop using Redacta.
- Ending. You may stop at any time by deleting the app. The photos and videos it saved to your gallery are yours and stay there; delete them yourself if you want them gone. We may end the service, or your use of it, at any time.
- Law. These terms are governed by the law of South Africa. A dispute goes to the courts of South Africa, unless the law of your country gives you the right to your own courts.
